The event first took place in 2003 and is now held each year on the last Sunday in June or the first Sunday in July to mark the end of Istanbul Pride week. Well over 30 people took part in Istanbul's first gay parade. The participants first gather in Taksim Square and then march along the boulevard-like İstiklal Caddesi .

The number of participants increased sharply every year, so that in 2010 over 5,000 people took part. The number doubled to 10,000 people in 2011, making Gay Pride Istanbul the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe. The 2012 Gay Parade March, held on July 1, drew up to 30,000 people.

On June 30, 2013, the gay parade drew nearly 100,000 people. The protesters were accompanied by demonstrators from Gezi Park , making Gay Pride Istanbul 2013 the largest gay parade ever held in Turkey and Eastern Europe.

In June 2015 the move was attacked by the police. Many of the participants were injured.

In June 2016, the Istanbul Province Governor's office refused to approve the parade after youth groups from the far-right Big Unity Party (BBP) threatened "do whatever it takes" to stop the parade. The representative of BBP Istanbul, Kursat Mican, said: “Dear officials, do not make us have to take care of them. Either you do what needs to be done or we will do it. We are ready to take any risk. We will keep the parade from taking place. ”It will not be allowed that“ degenerate ”could spread their fantasies in the city.

In 2017, the Gay Pride Parade was prevented by the Istanbul police using rubber bullets and water cannons. This year it coincided with the festival of breaking the fast at the end of Ramadan . Turkish nationalists and right-wing extremists raised the mood against the event in social networks. The provincial governor had banned the event the day before it was scheduled to take place for security reasons. According to the authorities, Gay Pride Istanbul endangers the safety of citizens and tourists as well as public order. The emergency services cordoned off the area around İstiklal Caddesi . Some activists managed to rally and chanted slogans, after which several of them were arrested. Organizers said more than 20 people had been arrested and police used rubber bullets to disperse the gathering.
