Itapaya is a town in the Cochabamba department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Itapaya is the central place of the canton Itapaya and is located in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sipe Sipe in the province of Quillacollo . The village is located at an altitude of 2464  m in a basin at the confluence of the Río Kakiari in the Río Rocha , the main source of the Bolivian Río Grande .

Itapaya is located in the Bolivian Cordillera Central in the transition area to the Bolivian lowlands. The region has a typical time-of-day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than during the year.

The mean average temperature of the region is around 20 ° C (see Capinota climate diagram) and fluctuates only slightly between 16 ° C in June and July and a good 22 ° C in November and December. The annual precipitation is about 550 mm and has a pronounced dry season from April to November with monthly precipitation of less than 10 mm, only in the wet season from December to March up to 140 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Itapaya is 42 km by road in a south-westerly direction from Cochabamba , the capital of the department.

From Cochabamba, the paved road Ruta 4 leads in a westerly direction via the town of Quillacollo to Parotani , where country roads to Capinota , Arque and San Pedro de Buena Vista branch off to the south . West of Parotani , Ruta 4 continues to Caracollo , where it meets Ruta 1 , which crosses the Altiplano from north to south and provides connections to La Paz , Oruro and Potosí .

Directly south of Parotani, Ruta 4 crosses the Río Tapacarí, and directly behind the bridge in Pirque a paved side road branches off in an easterly direction and reaches the village of Tajra after two kilometers and Itapaya after another two kilometers .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Sipe Sipe 83.9 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
