geography

Ituri lies in the northeast of the country and borders in the northwest with Haut-Uele , in the northeast with South Sudan , in the east with Uganda , in the south with North Kivu and in the west with Tshopo . history

Between 1966 and 2015 Ituri was a district of the former Orientale Province . According to the 2005 constitution, this should be divided into four new provinces. The administrative reform, however, was postponed several times and canceled in 2011, finally implemented in 2015 and thus raised Ituri to a province.

Internationally, Ituri became known primarily through the 1999 Ituri conflict between the Hema and Lendu ethnic groups .

structure

The province of Ituri is divided into the following territories: Aru, Djugu, Irumu, Mahagi, Mambasa.

Healthcare

Ituri is known as an area where the plague is endemic and where illnesses occur regularly. According to the World Health Organization, there are around 1,000 deaths from the plague every year. A major outbreak occurred between mid-May and June 13, 2006 in the Santé Linga region with over 100 reported deaths (and an unknown number unreported).

From 2018 to 2020, an Ebola fever epidemic raged in Ituri from the neighboring province of North Kivu . As of June 12, 2019, there were 198 documented illnesses and 118 deaths in the wake of this epidemic in Ituri.
