Life

Ivan Meštrović was born in the Strizivojna railway station near the village of Vrpolje in Slavonia . His parents Ivan Meštrović-Gabrilović and Marta Kurobasa were in Slavonia for the maize harvest. Immediately after the birth, Ivan Meštrović's parents drove back to the village of Otavice near Drniš , where Ivan Meštrović spent his childhood.

After studying at the Vienna Art Academy from 1907 to 1909 , Meštrović lived in Paris for a few years . Between the two world wars, he taught as an art professor at the Zagreb Art Academy . During this time he created the Strossmayer memorial in Zagreb, the Grgur Ninski memorial in Split and the Indian memorial in Chicago .

In 1947 Meštrović emigrated to the USA . In 1956 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .

Meštrović are ascribed strong influences on the currents of the European and North American arts. Inspired by Paris Expressionism and the Vienna Secession , his works bear traits of the Attic peoples and the Renaissance sculptures of Michelangelo , but at the same time he strengthens the tradition of his own people.

The Meštrović Gallery (Palace and Castellan) in Split and the Meštrović Atelier in Zagreb house a large number of his works. The marble - Relief work "Girl of Kosovo" (1908) in the National Museum Belgrade was seen in the old Yugoslav 50 dinar bill (around 1980). His main works include the mausoleum Meštrović in Otavice, the Roman Pietà (1942–1946) and the Jacob's Fountain (1957), both in the structure of the University of Notre Dame (USA), and the statue of Pobednik (1928) in Belgrade.

The grave of Ivan Mestrovic is located about ten kilometers from the southern Croatian town Drniš on a hill in the village of Otavice. In addition to Meštrović, the mausoleum also contains the remains of his family members.
