After only one year in the B-Team he was promoted to the professional team, where he was considered a huge talent and the new Spanish Diego Maradona . But although he was rarely able to show these great performances in over 60 games, many top international clubs wanted to sign the 1.71 m tall playmaker.

Rome, Marseille and return to Barcelona

In 1998 the traditional Italian club Lazio Rome made the race for de la Peña and transferred a transfer fee of 14.5 million euros for him . His first season in Serie A , Italy's top division, was not convincing and he was then loaned to Olympique Marseille in France . He eventually played for a year in Ligue 1 and ended the season without a title. He was then awarded to FC Barcelona , where he should develop further. But he only made nine appearances in the league and three in the UEFA Champions League .

2001 de la Peña returned to Rome, but could not prevail in the season.

Espanyol Barcelona

The move to Espanyol Barcelona was the late sporting liberation for him: at the age of 25 he became an important player in the team, which is constantly fluctuating between mediocrity and the UEFA Cup .

In the 2006/07 season , de la Peña reached the final of the UEFA Cup with Espanyol, which they lost on penalties to Sevilla FC . In the 2008/09 season he scored both goals for Espanyol in a 2-1 win at Camp Nou against FC Barcelona . In 2009 he extended his expiring contract for two more years until 2011. After the sudden death of Captain Daniel Jarque in early August 2009, de la Peña was appointed as the new captain.
