He was part of The Trendsetters tag team with Max Bauer and Pretty Psycho with Psycho. He and Brian Milonas were also the instructors at the Chaotic Wrestling Training Facility in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Smith appeared on December 16, 2005 at Velocity and lost to Doug Basham. The following year, on September 15, 2006, he appeared on SmackDown as Todd Hansen when he lost to Sylvester Terkay.

On February 16, 2008, Smith defeated Brandon for the NECW Television Championship. In late 2008, a number of vignettes featuring Smith were broadcast during Chaotic Wrestling's live events and on the internet. They showed Handsome Johnny discovering himself on a trip abroad and led to the introduction of "The Duke of Elegance" Don Chesterfield. Smith also used this character for the Eastern Wrestling Alliance, as well as for front row wrestling. In 2010, he changed his ring name to "Handsome" Johnny Hayes in NECW.

Ring of Honor (2013-2017)

Smith made his ROH debut on July 27, 2013. A few months later, he was announced as the eighth entrant in the 2014 edition of the Top Prospect tournament. He defeated Cheeseburger and Andrew Everett in the opening rounds before winning the tournament at Wrestling's Finest by defeating Raymond Rowe in the final. As a result, he got a match for the ROH World Television Championship against Tommaso Ciampa , but he lost it.

Shortly afterwards, he formed the War Machine tag team with Raymond Rowe in April. On August 22nd, War Machine defeated the Killer Elite Squad Davey Boy Smith Jr. and Lance Archer. On December 18, War Machine defeated Matt Taven and Michael Bennet to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship . They lost the titles to The Addiction Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian on May 9, 2016. War Machine left ROH on December 16, 2017.

Performances in Japan (2015-2018)

On September 14, 2015, Hanson and Rowe made their Japanese debut for Pro Wrestling Noah, along with Takashi Sugiura in a Six Man Tag Team Match in which they defeated Suzuki-gun Davey Boy Smith Jr., Lance Archer and Minoru Suzuki.

In November 2016, War Machine made their debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) by competing in the 2016 World Tag League tournament. They finished the tournament on December 7th with a record of four wins and three losses and failed to make it to the final.

On April 9, 2017, War Machine defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima at Sakura Genesis 2017 to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship . They lost the title to the Guerrillas of Destiny Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa on June 11th. On July 1, however, they were able to regain the title. They lost the title to Killer Elite Squad on September 24, 2017.
