Ivo Sieber (born August 30, 1957 in Altstätten ) is a Swiss diplomat . He has been the Swiss ambassador to Thailand since September 2015 .

Career

Ivo Sieber studied at the University of Zurich until 1982 law . He completed his studies with a licentiate and then obtained a postgraduate degree from the University of Sydney with a Master of Laws (1988).

In 1988 he joined the diplomatic service in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and was an attaché at the Swiss embassy in Harare , Zimbabwe until 1989 . It followed from 1990 a four-year post at the Swiss UN mission in New York , as before 1994 Counselor for the first time at the Swiss embassy in Bangkok was working.

After his assignment in Bangkok, the Swiss Foreign Ministry seconded him in 1998 for two years to Sulzer AG , a globally active Swiss industrial group based in Winterthur , where he was able to expand his knowledge to support the Swiss private sector.

From 2000 to 2001 Sieber was head of the International Environmental Affairs section in the FDFA , after which he worked as counselor in the Swiss embassy in London until 2004 . Back in Bern, Sieber was the (press) spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Minister until 2006.

Ivo Sieber's first assignment as ambassador was in Manila in mid-July 2010 ; previously he was the first employee of the head of mission in Stockholm from 2006 . He succeeded Ambassador Peter Sutter , who was retiring. In Manila, Sieber served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of the Philippines , the Republic of Palau , the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands .

In April 2015, Ivo Sieber was appointed by the Swiss Federal Council as the new Swiss Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand , the People's Democratic Republic of Laos and the Kingdom of Cambodia . On September 14, 2015, he took up this post in Bangkok as the successor to Christine Schraner Burgener , who was appointed Swiss Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany . At the beginning of November, he handed over his credentials to Lao President Choummaly Sayasone . In addition, on November 27, 2015, he had the opportunity to present his credentials to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at a solemn ceremony. Sieber is thus also formally qualified to take over his task in Thailand in full.

Private

Ivo Sieber has been married to Filipina Gracita for over 20 years. He has two daughters with her.
