Iwan Iwanowitsch Islenjew ( Russian Иван Иванович Исленьев ; * March 18 July / March 29,  1738 greg. , † February 22 July / March 4,  1784 greg. ) Was a Russian explorer , geodesist and astronomer .

Life

Islenev's father Ivan Stepanowitsch Islenjew and grandfather Stepan Ivanovich Islenev were voivodes . Islenev studied at the Academy-University of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences with a degree in geodesy and naval science . He then worked on problems of geodesy and astronomy in the geography department of the Imperial Academy of Sciences .

In 1767 the Academy of Sciences decided to conduct eight astronomical expeditions to observe the Venus transit in front of the sun in 1769 . In 1768 Islenev was sent to Yakutsk for this purpose. From 1769 to 1772 he then carried out geographic and natural history studies with astronomical measurements in Siberia together with the adjunct of the Geographic Institute F. Tschorn . In particular, they determined the geographic coordinates of Barnaul , Smeinogorsk , Kolywan , Ust-Kamenogorsk and Semipalatinsk , which they sent to Stepan Yakovlevich Rumovsky for presentation at the Academy. They also explored the Irtysh . In 1771 Islenjew was appointed adjunct of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the geography department.

In 1772 Islenjew traveled to Ismajil and then determined the geographic coordinates of Bucharest , Brăila , Focșani and Iași . The further journey took him to Kremenchuk , Bessarabia , Wallachia and Moldova . On the basis of the data he had collected, he created maps for a new atlas using Mikhail Lomonosov's method .
