Jörg K. Hoensch

Jörg Konrad Hoensch (born September 8, 1935 in Freudenthal , Czechoslovakia , † February 24, 2001 in Saarbrücken ) was a German historian .

Jörg Hoensch first grew up in Moravian-Silesia , his father came from the Spiš . After World War II the family was in the American zone of Germany expelled . After graduating from high school in Ludwigsburg , Hoensch studied German, history, English and Slavic studies at the universities of Marburg , Vienna , Bristol and Tübingen from 1955 . In 1959 he passed the first state examination in Tübingen. After a long study visit at the University of California , where he obtained a Master of Arts , he returned to Tübingen. In 1963 Hoensch received his doctorate from Werner Markert with a thesis on Slovakia and Adolf Hitler's Ostpolitik . He then worked for eight years as a research assistant at the Tübingen Institute for Eastern European History and Regional Studies. From 1972 until his retirement, Hoensch headed the chair for Eastern European history at Saarland University . On February 15, 2001, Hoensch ended his teaching activities with his farewell lecture held together with Reinhard Schneider , at the same time the chair was dissolved. From 1995 to 2001 Hoensch was co-editor of the journal for East Central Europe research . Hoensch was a member of the German-Czech and German-Slovak historians' commission .

Hoensch was considered one of the most important modern Eastern European experts and published numerous papers in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In 1996, Hoensch presented a standard work with his biography on the Roman-German Emperor Sigismund . In 2000 he published a relevant overview of the late medieval ruling dynasty of the Luxembourgers .
