German-Czech and German-Slovak Commission of Historians

The German-Czechoslovakian Historical Commission was founded in 1990 by Foreign Ministers Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Jiří Dienstbier . Since the separation of the Czech and Slovak Republics in 1993, there has been a German-Czech and a German-Slovak Commission of Historians , the German sections of which have identical staff. As a rule, both commissions work together.

The aim of the Historians' Commission is to research the history of Germans, Czechs and Slovaks. The focus of the work is on the 20th century . The commission tries to analyze the unifying and dividing experiences of Germans, Czechs and Slovaks in a broad historical context and from a comparative perspective and to contribute to the processing, in particular, of controversial points in the relationship between Germans and Czechs or Slovaks. Part of the mandate of the commission is, as a scientific body, to develop and advance its topics, questions and objectives as well as working methods independently of political guidelines.

A working group within the German-Czech and German-Slovak Historians Commission dealt with the publication of an annotated collection of sources on the history of the 20th century for teaching in German, Czech and Slovak schools. The book deals with the central themes of high school teaching in all three countries. A Central European perspective is chosen in order to sharpen the eye for similarities and differences in the history of the Germans, Czechs and Slovaks in a pan-European context. The so-called teaching materials will be published at the end of 2019.

On September 9, 2010, an independent initiative group, supported by historians from the German-Czech and German-Slovak Historians' Commission, and historians from the German-Polish Textbook Commission , published an alternative draft for the planned permanent exhibition of the "Escape, Expulsion, Reconciliation Foundation" (SFVV). The background to the advance was the long-term lack of a concrete concept for the planned permanent exhibition as well as a public debate about the plans of the SFVV. The draft became a first impulse for a scientific discussion about the planned exhibitions of the foundation.
