Jörg Lederer

Jörg Lederer (* around 1470 probably in Füssen or Kaufbeuren ; † around 1550 in Kaufbeuren) was a German wood sculptor.

Life

There are only about a dozen mentions of Jörg Lederer's existence and living conditions. You find yourself

  • the earliest proof of existence was the registration of citizens at Füssen on June 12, 1499
  • in the registers of the town and country chancellery records of Kaufbeuren kept in Neuburg an der Donau , which are missing for the years from 1531 to 1546
  • in a guild book copy of the Kaufbeurer city archive
  • in files of the local Protestant parish archive
  • in documents in which mostly only the name of Jörg Lederer appears with the names of his neighbors in the "Hintern Gasse am Eck"
  • on a 35 cm long copy of the inscription on the box of a former altar in Serfaus near Landeck in the Inn Valley (which is met with suspicion because Lederer did not use to sign his work)
  • in one mention for Hindelang 1654/91 and 1828/29
  • in a mention in the parish archives of Partschins near Merano from 1780

For Füssen as the place of birth, details in the document of the citizen registration and Lederer's relations in the Vinschgau would speak, because the monastery of Sankt Mang in Füssen owned wineries there. The experts suspect the apprenticeship years in Kaufbeuren, where the Pildschitzer Konrad Köppel or Jakob Bentelin , who lives in the neighborhood, could have been possible masters. The style criticism directs his traveling years to Ulm , which at that time was the leader in wood sculpture thanks to the Ulm School , and where the cathedral stalls by Jörg Syrlin the Elder. Ä. and the shrine pictures by Jörg Syrlin d. J. in Bingen have had a lasting influence on him. The works of the Strigel family of artists from Memmingen , a much sought-after artist dynasty of its time, would not be considered.

In 1499 he became a "master" citizen of Füssen . He would have been at least 25 years old and married at the time. Lederer then went to Kaufbeuren , where he bought into the Kramer guild between 1500 and 1507 and ran a flourishing carving workshop with several journeymen and subordinate masters. He delivers to South Tyrol and Savoy. In 1513 he was named guild master of sculptors , in 1529 he was named old guild master .

Only a few works have survived from the last two decades of his life. It is believed that this is due to the demands of his public office.

An elementary school in Kaufbeuren is named after Jörg Lederer, and his home in Kaufbeurer Ludwigstrasse near the Kappeneck is now a sight.
