Jörg Traeger (born January 21, 1942 in Rosenheim ; † July 29, 2005 in Munich ) was a German art historian, artist and university professor.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Rosenheim, Jörg Traeger studied Medieval and Modern Art History, Classical Archeology and Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the University of Munich from 1961 to 1966. At the same time, he began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1962, which he completed in 1966 as the best of his year with the 1st state examination for artistic teaching at secondary schools. After receiving his doctorate in 1968 with Wolfgang Braunfels in Munich, he completed his habilitation in 1973 with "Studies on the work of Philipp Otto Runge ", also in Munich.

In the 1976/77 winter semester, Traeger was appointed to the newly created chair for art history at the University of Regensburg , which he held until his death. The Bavarian Academy of Sciences elected Traeger in 1997 as a full member of the philosophical-historical class. Traeger was a visiting professor at Jyväskyla University, Abo Akademi University, Finland, at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan, and at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, USA. He turned down calls to the universities of Bonn (1985) and Tübingen (1994). Traeger had been a member and chairman of the board of trustees of the Central Institute for Art History in Munich since 1992, and in 1994 he was elected to the board of the Association for the Promotion of the Art History Institute in Florence . In 2000, Traeger was appointed to the advisory board of the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, and from 2002 he was deputy chairman of the advisory board of the Bibliotheca Hertziana and of the Art History Institute in Florence . The city of Regensburg awarded him the Albertus Magnus Medal in 1991 .

Traeger's scientific work covers a broad spectrum. Central topics of his work were a. the Renaissance , the French Revolution , Romanticism , Modernism and the Walhalla near Regensburg. In doing so, Traeger often pursued the approach of a global interpretation of important works of art in the context of their time, placing them at the center of an art and general historical consideration of the respective epoch.

As an artist, Traeger was mainly active as a painter. His work was created in two separate creative periods. By 1971 he created a large number of works of art that differ considerably in terms of their motifs and the techniques used. After a lengthy creative break, he painted a view of Regensburg in 1986 ("Regensburg with Stone Bridge", oil on hardboard), which resulted in exclusively landscape motifs or cityscapes, primarily of Regensburg, in the form of oil paintings.

In addition to his work as a university teacher and artist, Traeger repeatedly appeared in the course of his life in the interests of monument preservation . Among other things, he campaigned against a Danube bridge or a sewage sludge dump in the immediate vicinity of Walhalla in Donaustauf near Regensburg, the construction of a bishop's crypt in Regensburg Cathedral , the construction of a bus station in Regensburg's green belt, the construction of a flood wall in the Regensburg district of Stadtamhof and the renovation of Divide the princely residence of Thurn und Taxis in Regensburg into a conference center with a hotel. He also played a key role in the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche .

Jörg Traeger died on July 29, 2005 in Munich.
