Jewish cemetery (Cramberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery Cramberg is a Jewish cemetery in the local community of Cramberg in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument .

The cemetery is located about 700 meters northwest of Cramberg on the upper part of the wooded slope down to the Lahn opposite Geilnau . The cemetery with a total of about 60 tombstones consists of an older part on a sloping slope that is now wooded. Some gravestones are partially sunk in or strongly inclined. Some of them contain artistic inscriptions. The older gravestones are inscribed in Hebrew , in a transition period they were then often inscribed in German on the other hand, while more recent inscriptions often only used Jewish symbols and the stones were inscribed in German. The newer part of the cemetery is east of the older part on a meadow bordered by a hornbeam hedge. In the western part of the meadow there is a memorial plaque made of steel, which commemorates the Jewish victims of the National Socialist rule from Cramberg. The plaque was inaugurated in October 2011.

The cemetery was laid out in the 17th century. The princes of Schaumburg intended it to be a burial place for the Jews of the Grafschaft Schaumburg . The cemetery was mainly occupied by Jews from Cramberg and Holzappel until a Jewish cemetery was built there.
