The vehicles of the series IIa4 were narrow-gauge train tender - locomotives of the kuk Bosnabahn (kkBB) and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB).

history

For the development of the areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina occupied by Austria from 1878 onwards , narrow-gauge railways with the so-called Bosnian gauge were built . Curve-moving locomotives with Klose steering axles were used on the demanding routes with tight curve radii . The first 34 machines were twin locomotives with simple use of steam expansion and were designated as series IIIa4 . In order to improve the economy and increase the speed, the Bosnabahn and the BHStB decided to purchase series IIa4 locomotives .

From 1895 to 1894 Krauss delivered seven IIa4 express train locomotives to the BHStB in Linz , after the Bosnabahn had already received the same machine a year earlier. The machines had a 1'B1 'wheel arrangement like the Orlèans type of the State Railway Company .

The Yugoslav State Railways (JDŽ) designated the machines as the 178 series. Most of the machines remained in operation until the 1950s. At least one copy was also used on a pioneer railway in Ljubljana .

Constructive features

BHStB IIa4 105 as 178-005 for the JDŽ .

The locomotives had a compound drive with two internal cylinders. On the two coupling axles there were 200 millimeter wide wheels without flanges . The track was guided by the front and rear running axles, which were designed as Klose steering axles and were adjusted radially by the two-axle tender.

The locomotives had outer frames and inner cylinders overhanging the barrel axis. Flat slide valves took over the steam distribution via an Allan control . The standing boiler sagged behind the coupling axles between the frame cheeks.

With a top speed of 60 km / h, the IIa4 series were the fastest narrow-gauge locomotives in the world. However, due to the low demand, express trains were initially abandoned.
