The JIMS - summer academy for Jazz and Improvised Music Salzburg was a six-day international summer academy for jazz and improvised music in Salzburg until 2008 . It was a co-production of the Salzburg cultural organizations Jazzbase , Jazzit : Musik: Club and ARGEkultur . In parallel with the training for musicians a series top-class jazz concerts in the consortium in was Nonntal and the Jazz Club Jazzit offered (JIMS festivals, Stadtpfeiffer) : A special feature of JIMS festivals were the public jam session every evening took place after the concerts. The event was described by the French musician Nguyên Lê as “Europe's most progressive summer academy for the art of improvisation”. For years it was the flagship of modern music in Salzburg alongside the Saalfelden jazz festival .

history

The JIMS was founded in 1997 by the musicians Robert Kainar and Gottfried Stöger to compensate for the lack of a professional training center for jazz in Salzburg - the Mozarteum only offers new music . The JIMS, which was called the “International Jazz Seminar” for the first seven years , lasted three days and was organized by the Arge Nonntal. Right from the start, internationally known jazz musicians were invited to pass on their knowledge.

Over the years the International Jazz Seminar has developed from a three-day event to an important attraction for jazz musicians from all over the world. With the name change to JIMS, a paradigm shift also took place. The JIMS should no longer convey all styles of jazz such as swing , bebop or Latin , but rather focus exclusively on the latest trends such as jazz avant-garde or improvised chamber music and thus be aimed at advanced jazz musicians.

In addition to the Summer Academy, the JIMS Festival has also been taking place since 2006 , which is also dedicated to the latest trends in jazz. Today the JIMS is a project of a Salzburg association to promote jazz, the Jazzbase . In 1997, as today, lessons consist of instrumental lessons (individually and in groups), ensemble lessons and lectures. However, not only “classical” jazz instruments are used, but also string instruments such as violin , viola and cello . The lessons still take place in the ArgeKultur , as do some of the concerts.

One innovation in 2007 was the international composition competition for improvised chamber music called Stadtpfeifer .

The seminar has not been held since the last event in 2008; it was discontinued due to financial bottlenecks.
