Jacareí , officially Portuguese Município de Jacareí , is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . It is located in the economically strong settlement region of Vale do Paraíba and is part of the metropolitan region of Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte . In 2019, the population called jacareienses (Jacareienser) was estimated at 233,662 people, who live on around 464 km². It is around 82 km from the capital, São Paulo .
history
A claim as donor in the area of Mogi das Cruzes of the captaincy of São Vicente took place in 1652. Diogo de Faro e Sousa (1620–1668) created the place Vila da Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Paraíba on November 22, 1653 , from which the independent city Jacareí later emerged.
An old connecting route led via Jacareí over the Rio Paraíba do Sul into the hinterland to the mining regions of today's Minas Gerais .
