Swann, who worked as a billing clerk, played as a goalkeeper mainly for the amateur club Northern Nomads based in the Greater Manchester area . In May 1910 he took part with the team in an international tournament in Belgium, which was held on the occasion of the world exhibition taking place there . With victories over the Daring Club de Bruxelles , HVV Den Haag and Union Saint-Gilloise , the eight-team tournament was won.

Occasionally Swann, who was allowed to play as an amateur athlete for several clubs at the same time, also played for the reserve team of Manchester City , for the first time in March 1904. In September 1909 he played a friendly game with the Nomads against Manchester City (final score 1: 2), where he was the outstanding player of his team should have been. After a short-term injury-related failure of Manchester City goalkeeper Jack Lyall , he represented this in October 1909 in a game in the Football League Second Division at Stockport County . The press praised his performance in the 2-1 victory, the Athletic News noted : "City could only thank Swann for not being further behind at halftime" and attested that he was "very safe" in guarding his goal . In the following season he was registered as a backup of Manchester City in the Football League , but did not make any further competitive appearances for the first team, for City's reserve team he last appeared in the 1911/12 season.

In April 1915 Swann was active for the first time for Rochdale AFC , and played six games in the Central Football League for the club by the end of the season , after the cessation of regular play in the summer of 1915 due to the First World War , he played two more games in December as a substitute competition organized Lancashire Section of the Football League . From the spring of 1916 he played repeatedly for Manchester United in the substitute competitions, parallel to his appearances for United Swann was also in goal several times for Liverpool FC from autumn 1916 , including a win in front of 23,000 spectators against local rivals Everton . An ankle injury in early 1917 put an end to this. Swann was still registered as a player with Manchester United until April 1922, but he did not come to another use after his injury.

Water polo

Swann was also active in water polo as a goalkeeper. In this sport he first appeared for the Salford Swimming Club from 1902 at the latest , and from 1910 he guarded the gate for Hyde Seal . As early as 1906 he played as a player from Salford in a selection game of the Lancashire County Water Polo and Swimming Association , in 1909 he played for a selection from Manchester and District against North-East Lancashire . From 1911 to 1913 Swann won the English water polo championship three times in a row with Hyde Seal. In 1911 the team beat Wigan 7: 6, 1912 Horsey 8: 2 and in 1913 Wigan again 4: 1. In a match report from the final victory in 1913, he is attested “to have had the gift of being where he was needed every time” and “Swann was intelligent in goal, his saves in the first half were quick and precise. In the second half he was as good as unemployed. "

Table tennis

When table tennis became more popular in the British Isles in the early 1920s , Swann also successfully practiced this sport and subsequently also took on official duties there.

In March 1923 he was on the side of England in the first international match against Wales and contributed with a score of 7: 1 to the 52:12 success. In the spring of 1928 he played with a selection from Manchester against a Hungarian touring team ( Zoltán Mechlovits , László Bellák , Dániel Pécsi and Sándor Glancz ), which had dominated the World Championships in London in 1926 and in Stockholm in 1928. To great jubilation, Swann, who represented the Adelphi Table Tennis Club , achieved the only success of the local selection in the last game against Glancz.

When the Manchester League was founded in 1927, he was appointed to the league committee and, as a representative of Manchester, was a member of the executive committee of the English Table Tennis Association until his death . At the national association he was also part of the selection committee that nominated the players for country comparisons until 1937.
