Jack and the cuckoo clock heart (original title Jack et la mechanique du cœr , German Jack and the mechanics of the heart ) is a French - Belgian animated film by the two directors Mathias Malzieu and Stéphane Berla from 2013. Malzieu also wrote the literary template La mécanique du coeur (German title: Die Mechanik des Herzens ), dubbed the main character Jack and is the singer of the French band Dionysos, which is responsible for the film music.

action

Jack's mother dragged herself up the mountain to Madeleine on April 16, 1874, heavily pregnant, on the coldest night Edinburgh has ever known, in the hope that the midwife could bring her son into the world. Madeleine succeeds too, but the boy has a heart defect: his heart is frozen. And so Madeleine replaces it with a cuckoo clock . The next morning, the mother secretly disappears, leaving Jack to the midwife who is raising the boy. But there are three rules for the unusual pacemaker that Jack must follow from now on: Jack must not get upset, must not adjust the hands of his watch and, most important of all: he must not fall in love.

In the seclusion of the unusual shared apartment, which is also home to two prostitutes and a xylophone player who has grown together with his instrument, Jack manages to heed the rules. But on a trip to town he meets the singer Acacia and immediately falls in love. He passes out and when he comes to his senses the girl is gone. Madeleine can prevent the worst, but Jack wants to go to school from now on. There he comes across the student Joe, an eloquent schoolyard tyrant, who teases him from now on. Like Jack, he's in love with Acacia.

After a fight in the schoolyard, Joe loses an eye because of the cuckoo clock. Jack flees in a panic, but shortly afterwards Madeleine is arrested and later dies in her cell. With the help of the flat share, Jack escapes and travels to Paris, where he meets the friendly director Georges Méliès , whom he joins.

At a fair in Andalusia he meets Acacia again, who now calls herself Miss Acacia and is the star of the fair. He himself hires as a showman in the ghost train. When he reveals himself to Acacia, the two begin to grow closer. Suddenly, however, Joe appears. Joe tells her about the events in Edinburgh and Jack is so desperate that he throws away the key to wind the clock and then runs away. But Acacia catches up with him and the two kiss each other. At that moment time stands still and Jack climbs into the sky on the snowflakes.

background

The animation film is based on the literary template La mécanique du coeur (German title: Die Mechanik des Herzens ) by Mathias Malzieu from 2007. The film borrows its visual style from steampunk - and Gothic culture . Typically for steampunk, futuristic-looking machines are depicted in the Victorian era , such as an accordion-like railway, the cuckoo clock itself or the film utensils from Méliès. The pale drawings of the characters and the gloomy atmosphere of the film itself are based on Gothic.

Elements of the musical are also included. In this way, important storylines are accompanied musically and vocally. Malzieu wrote all of the music for the film with his band Dionysos.

In Germany, the film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014 and then opened in cinemas on July 3, 2014. Sales took Universum Film . It was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 5, 2014.

reception

In 2014 the film was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Animated Film and for a César .

The film received a number of favorable reviews. Katrin Hoffmann awarded four out of five possible stars for Epd Film and wrote:

“Despite the 3-D technology, the film makes an almost outdated, anachronistic impression, its images and characters are reminiscent of Tim Burton films and with its warm colors it leaves no doubt about a positive mood. The journeys in train and horse-drawn carriage are animated in origami and pop-up picture book style, so that a very lively dynamic is created, but implemented in a contrapuntal way using old paper techniques. Modern image processing and an old-fashioned style of animation complement each other with ease - and the viewer can be carried away to a time when cinema was just being invented. "

The website medienbewusst.de judged:

“'Jack and the Cuckoo Clock' is a lovingly told story that follows the paths of Tim Burton's classic. Detailed backdrops and impressive tracking shots allow the viewer to easily immerse themselves in the bizarre world of film. The pieces of music do not quite achieve the quality of Disney, but are still good and consistent. "

- Kevin Stark : medienbewusst.de

The television magazine TV Today ruled:

“With a bizarre imagination and without lard, the Gothic fairy tale tells a story that is slightly reminiscent of ' Edward Scissorhands ', but has a warmth that is missing from Tim Burton today. In the German version of the French cinema pearl, as in the international version, the characters mostly sing in English. In view of the well-synchronized dialogues, one would have wished for a German version. "
