Jackie Chan is Nobody ( Chinese  我 是 誰  /  我 是 谁 , Pinyin wǒ shì shéi , English: Who Am I? ) Is an action and martial arts film with Jackie Chan, produced in Hong Kong in 1998 .

action

Jackie is a member of a mercenary group that is supposed to kidnap three scientists and steal a meteorite for their clients in South Africa . With the help of the meteorite, weapons of great destructive power can be built. After successfully completing the job, however, the employers of the mercenary group let the helicopter with Jackie and the other mercenaries crash. So all witnesses should be eliminated. Jackie is the only one to survive the crash and is found injured by natives who hospitably welcome him. However, he has lost his memory and is therefore given the name "Who am I?" By the natives, a phrase that Jackie says again and again after waking up from unconsciousness.

When he is led by the natives to the place where the helicopter crashed, the first fragments of memory come up in his memory. He tries to come back to civilization and fully regain his memory. In the process, wearing the clothing and paint of a native, he meets participants in a desert rally who have had an accident. After a little misunderstanding (Yuki, the driver of the crashed car, thinks he is a cannibal who wants to eat her brother and navigator), he provides medical help for the injured navigator and repairs the car. You drive the rally to the end and be the first car to reach the destination and with it civilization.

Due to the media hype about the lifesaver with Indian paint from the winning vehicle, Jackie is quickly found by his old clients. In the meantime, these have destroyed a power plant in a first test of the explosive force of the meteorite. Morgan, his old employer, introduces himself to Jackie as a CIA agent who wants to help him. Since Jackie's memories are still very fragmentary, he falls for it and trusts him. It is only thanks to Yuki's driving skills and the help of the supposed journalist Christine that he escapes Morgan's captors. Christine informs him that the headquarters of his old clients and current hunters is a company in Rotterdam .

Jackie travels to Rotterdam with Christine, still believing that Morgan is a CIA agent who wants to help him. He began to have doubts about Christine's alleged activity as a journalist. Morgan's people are also trying to kill Jackie in Rotterdam. He finally penetrates their headquarters and learns what the villains are actually about: They are arms dealers who want to sell the "meteorite bomb" to a prospective buyer for a billion dollar amount. The interested party is also in the arms dealer's headquarters for the purpose of closing the deal. Jackie steals a CD with the evidence of the arms trade and tries to escape. After an action-packed path to the roof of the building, Jackie flees from his hunters down the outer facade. Once at the bottom, the alleged journalist and actual CIA agent Christine is already waiting with the police to arrest the entire gun dealer gang. Jackie finally finds his way back to his complete memory.

Reviews

"After this film at the latest, Chan's popularity will no longer be a mystery to Europeans."

“An action vehicle for lovers of the genre, tailored entirely to the main actor. The simplicity of the story is offset by perfect stunts and fight scenes. "

“In short: The first hour is simply so boring that you can safely be late without missing anything worth mentioning. It's only when Chan is running at full speed that he can show what he's so popular for. Chan is the fastest martial arts artist and his slapstick interludes are unique. It is not for nothing that Chan does all of his stunts himself and has broken dozens of bones during such actions. But at Nobody even his fans have to turn a blind eye for a long time before they are finally rewarded. Only Michelle Ferre is a point of light at the end of the tunnel, unfortunately she is only allowed to turn one kick in the entire film. "

Remarks

  • The film was originally planned as a two-part, but this was later discarded. Therefore, most of the scenes in Africa have been cut out or shortened to make room for the action scenes in Europe.

Awards

  • Hong Kong Film Awards 1999: Nominations in the categories “Best Actor” (Jackie Chan), “Best Editing” (Peter Cheung), “Best Sound Design” and “Best Film”. Winner in the category “Best Action Choreography” (Jackie Chan).
