Jacob Coenraad Ritsema (born June 10, 1869 in Haarlem , North Holland Province ; † December 15, 1943 in Laren , North Holland Province) was a Dutch landscape , genre , portrait and still life painter from the Düsseldorf and Hague Schools .

Ritsema, son of the Haarlem printer Coenraad Ritsema (1834-1916) and his Rotterdam-born wife Jeanette Moulijn, was the oldest of four children. They all grew up in an art-loving environment and learned to play the piano. His father had trained as a lithographer in Düsseldorf and was then succeeded by his father Jacob (1803–1867) as the owner of the Haarlem book and lithographic printing company Met en Meijlink . While Ritsema's sisters Catharine (later pianist) and Coba Ritsema were initially not given permission to leave the house for vocational training or study, and brother Johan was sent to Paris to do an apprenticeship in lithography, Jacob Ritsema went to Düsseldorf at the age of 15 and studied from 1884 to 1887 at the Royal Prussian Art Academy, painting. There were Heinrich Lauenstein , Hugo Crola , Peter Janssen the Elder and Adolf Schill his teachers. After studying in Düsseldorf, Ritsema went to Scheveningen near The Hague to the painter Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël (1828–1903), a childless friend of his father's, who treated and taught him like his own son. There he met Alijda van den Broeck (* 1881), whom he married on August 30, 1911. The couple had two children, their son Coen (* 1912) and their daughter Alijda. Ritsema lived in 's-Graveland and Kortenhoef ( Wijdemeren ) and Scheveningen (until 1892), Elspeet (1893), later in Haarlem (1893 to 1938) and most recently in Laren. He had numerous students and was a member of the Amsterdam Vereeniging Sint Lucas , the Amsterdam Association Arti et Amicitiae , the Haagsche Kunstkring and the Hague Kunstverein Pulchri Studio .

Ritsema mainly painted landscapes, in varying lighting moods and colors, occasionally also portraits, views of courtyards, still lifes and pieces of flowers. For a landscape near Pont-Aven he received the Willink van Collenprijs and the St. Lucasprijs . Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont bought a rain of his landscapes, Queen Wilhelmina two bought his paintings, including a landscape with fishermen in the evening mist , which later in the study Queen Juliana in Soestdijk Palace hung.
