Van Ronzelen was the son of the Dutch hydraulic engineering director van Ronzelen. After completing his technical training at the military school in Delft , van Ronzelen joined the Dutch civil service as an engineer in 1819 and gained his experience in the construction of the North Holland Canal and the naval facilities in Nieuwe Diep ( Den Helder ) until 1824 . He later succeeded his father as hydraulic engineering director in Amsterdam.

Bremen's mayor Johann Smidt commissioned van Ronzelen in 1826 with an expert opinion on the construction of a port at the mouth of the Geeste , which he submitted in 1827. He was employed as port construction director for Bremerhaven and construction officer for water, dyke and agriculture in Bremen. He started construction that same year. The old port and the lock were completed in 1829/30. When the port was built, a new dike was built.

In 1829, at his instigation, the building of the classicist Bremisches Amtshaus at the harbor followed, a land use plan for Bremerhaven, the road construction to Lehe with the Leher Chaussee (today the upper part of Hafenstrasse ) and the first development plan from 1831 with its grid system of streets.

He was involved in the planning of the Norderneyer lighthouse , the Hohe Weg lighthouse and hydraulic engineering work in Bremen , Kiel and Cuxhaven . According to his plans, a swing bridge and a dry dock in Hamburg were built in Kiel . In addition, he developed coastal fortification plans and port construction plans for Heligoland for Prussia .

Despite some criticism that he had to endure, van Ronzelen had a high international reputation as a hydraulic engineer.
