Origin and content

Greenpeace ship Esperanza

The film, produced in coproduction with Bayerischer Rundfunk , documents the voyage of 37 activists on the Greenpeace ship Esperanza to the Southern Ocean in winter 2007/2008. There the crew goes in search of a Japanese whaling fleet to prevent whales from being harpooned.

The film team accompanied the activists and documented the events. The focus is not only on the observation of the actions, but especially on the presentation of the personal situation and motivation of the activists who endured months of hardship in the Antarctic. Although the opponents of whaling manage to track down the hunting fleet in the Arctic Ocean and hinder their catches, the mission ultimately fails after a week-long chase, as a lack of fuel forces the Esperanza to turn back. In contrast, the whaler Nisshin Maru is shown while refueling south of the 60th parallel, which is a violation of the environmental protocol of the Antarctic Treaty .

According to the producers, Greenpeace supported the making of the film, but is not involved in the financing or the content of the film.
