Jakob Friedrich von Bredow

Jakob Friedrich von Bredow (born December 10, 1702 in Bredow , † May 7, 1783 in Brandenburg ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the cuirassier regiment of the same name .

Life

He was the son of the captain Jakob Ludolf von Bredow (* December 28, 1667, † October 20, 1725), the hereditary lord on Bredow. His mother was Anna Elisabeth von Bredow (* April 23, 1675; † March 3, 1710), she was the sister of Lieutenant General Asmus Ehrenreich von Bredow (1693-1756).

Military career

Von Bredow entered Prussian service in 1717 and joined the Crown Prince's cuirassier regiment . He passed through the officer positions there and became major on September 27, 1746 . On December 9, 1757 he was promoted from lieutenant colonel to major general. In 1758 he received the cuirassier regiment "Alt-Schönaich". He was taken prisoner in Austria during the Battle of Maxen . From there he was released at the end of the war in 1763 and sentenced by a Prussian court martial.

However, he was only released from the army at his own request in 1769. Between 1740 and 1759 he took part in all campaigns. He fought in the battles of Hohenfriedberg , Lobositz , Kolin , Breslau , Leuthen , Zorndorf and Hochkirch . For his bravery in the battle of Chotusitz , von Bredow was awarded the order Pour le Mérite . He was shot in the shoulder in the Battle of Thrush .

After his release, he ran into financial difficulties and tried to shoot himself. The bullet ricocheted off his skull. When General Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz heard about it, he intervened with the king and provided Bredow with a pension of 1,000 thalers. Shortly afterwards his brother died; he inherited a lot of money which he later bequeathed to poor relief.
