Jakob Kjeldbjerg (born October 21, 1969 in Frederiks) is a former Danish football player and current television presenter .

As a football player, he was voted Denmark's best youth player in 1992 and Player of the Year in the Super League in 1993 . He also starred in 1994 with the FC Chelsea in the FA Cup final .

Club career

Kjeldbjerg began his career in the youth of his home club Alhedens IF before moving to the larger Viborg FF . In Viborg he developed to a great defensive talent and rose to the U-17 national player of his country.

After a year on loan at the then third division team Holstebro BK , he made his breakthrough at Viborg, with which he rose to the top division in 1989 as runner-up behind Kjøbenhavn's Boldklub . Although he rose with the club in the following season as bottom of the table again immediately, but was obliged due to strong performances by the larger Silkeborg IF .

At Silkeborg he met coach Viggo Jensen , who at the time was also in charge of the Danish U-21 national team in addition to the club , where he had already appointed Kjeldbjerg captain. As a result, he matured under Jensen from talent to one of the strongest defensive players in the league and rose to the national team .

After an outstanding season in 1992/93 , in which he was able to score seven goals in 31 league games as a defender and completely dismantled opponent Diego Maradona in an international match against Argentina , he became one of the most sought-after Danish transfer shares.

In August 1993 he moved to the English Premier League for Chelsea for the club's record transfer fee of just under £ 500,000, which existed until 2002 . He was also a regular in London right away and formed a strong central defense with the Norwegian Erland Johnsen . Due to his physical style of play, paired with unconditional commitment, he became a crowd favorite during his first season and is still considered one of the best purchases made by the player-coach Glenn Hoddle at the time .

At the end of the 1994/95 season he suffered a serious knee injury, which forced him to end his career prematurely at the age of 27 after almost two years of convalescence .

National team

1985 Kjeldbjerg made his debut for Denmark in the 0-2 defeat of the U-17 national team against Norway in Bergen .

As a result, he took part in the respective selections at the U-16 European Football Championship 1986 , U-18 European Football Championship 1988 , U-21 European Football Championship 1992 and the 1992 Olympic Football Tournament .

The most successful was the U-21 Euro in 1992, in which they were unfortunately only eliminated in the semi-finals against eventual winners Italy. Kjelbjerg shared the captaincy with Claus Thomsen .

He made his debut in the senior national team on November 18, 1992 in a 0-1 away win in the World Cup qualifying against Northern Ireland . The breakthrough came in his third international match in a 1-1 draw in the friendly against Argentina . Kjeldbjerg completely took Diego Maradona , who was then considered the best player in the world, out of the game, which caused a stir internationally. As a result, he was a regular player until his premature retirement.

Between 1985 and 1994 he appeared 74 times for his home country on an international level.

After the active career

After the premature end of his playing career, he started in 1998 as a commentator for league and Champions League games on the Danish television channel TV3 .

In 2002 he took over as presenter of the reality TV show "Robinson Ekspeditions" , which is popular in Denmark and which he still presents today. Since 2007 he has also hosted the football show "Onside" . He is considered one of the most popular moderators in his country.
