Life

Jakob Zellweger-Zuberbühler was a son of Johannes Zellweger and Anna Hirzel. In 1793 he married Anna Barbara Zuberbühler, daughter of Johann Georg Zuberbühler, doctor and councilor. After private tuition in Trogen, Zellweger received commercial training from 1785 to 1788 in the branches of his father's trading company in Lyon and from 1788 to 1789 in Barcelona . In 1789 he joined the Trogen parent company and in 1792 became a partner in the trading company. From 1802 he managed the Zellweger & Compagnie with his brother Johann Caspar Zellweger . After he left the company in 1808, he was the sole owner of the company. From 1790 Zellweger served as councilor in Trogen, 1796 as Ausserrhoder Grand Council and 1798 as regional witness. During the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1801 he lived in exile in Vorarlberg . Back in Ausserrhoden he rose politically quickly: in 1801 he was a deputy to the Swiss parliament and a senator . From 1802 to 1818 he worked as Landammann and delegate of the Diet. His conservative attitude made him a committed federalist . Therefore, and also because of its rain contacts with Austria which took him French from 1802 to 1803 for three months in Aarburg in arrest . They managed to put him under house arrest for six months in 1809 and 1810 because of alleged contacts with the Tyrolean insurgents . Zellweger acted from 1814 to 1815 as the federal representative in the canton of St. Gallen and in 1815 during the 6th coalition war in the headquarters of General Niklaus Franz von Bachmann . In the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, he carried out the rapid restoration of the old institutions and commanded in an absolutist manner until he was voted out in 1818. The management fell short under his political commitment. She suffered from his poor business skills and sumptuous lifestyle. In 1817 Zellweger liquidated his trading company. The residential and commercial building he built in Trogen from 1803 to 1805 was converted into the town hall from 1841 to 1842 .
