The Protestant Jakobskirche is the first church in Gernsbach , the historic capital of the lower Murg Valley in the Baden-Württemberg district of Rastatt .

Development and construction history

In 1219 the previous building of the church was first mentioned in a document together with the town of Gernsbach. It was created in the church village outside the Gernsbach city walls, also known as the courtyard , on allodial property of the Counts of Eberstein . In 1243 the church was raised to an independent parish church . In the years 1467–1471, today's church was built as a single-nave basilica .

The Jakobskirche was the church of the Counts of Eberstein in the Middle Ages . When Gernsbach and the County of Eberstein went over to the Reformation around 1556 , the Jakobskirche became a Protestant church. The Liebfrauenkirche remained as Gernsbach's Catholic church. The denominational conflicts due to the Badisch -eberstein rule over the city, the Upper Baden occupation and the Thirty Years War led to the temporary recatholization and closure of the Jakobskirche. An agreement from 1626 allowed both denominations in Gernsbach. The regulation that is still valid today, assigning the Church of St. James to the Protestants and the Church of Our Lady to the Catholics, dates back to 1640.

Building description

Location and appearance

The Jakobskirche stands on an elevation above the Murg on Ebersteingasse. Opposite is the cemetery. The single-nave church, built of sandstone , is crowned above the front facade with a baroque roof turret from 1746. The weather vane shows the patron saint of the church, James the Elder , depicted as a pilgrim with a staff and hiking hat. This depiction indicates that the Church of St. James was on a Way of St. James , which came from Swabia and led via Alsace and Burgundy to Santiago de Compostela .

Interior and artistic equipment

The visitor enters the nave of the church via an anteroom . In 1771 this was given a simple mirror vault , which is decorated with small ceiling paintings . For reasons of space, a U-shaped gallery was built into the nave . The choir has retained its late Gothic appearance. The choir is dominated by a Christ on the cross , which dates from the 16th century and is carved from linden wood.

On the left of the choir is the tabernacle , which was spared the iconoclast of the Reformation . It shows a pelican on the top of the tower that nourishes its young with its blood. This symbol indicates the self-sacrifice of Christ , in which believers can partake through the sacrament . The grave slab of Wilhelm IV von Eberstein and Countess Johanna von Hanau is attached to the left wall . The eight-sided font dates from 1716 and received a copper lid in 1960.

The pulpit , the ambo and the colored glasses of the choir windows were renewed in 1966. In a modern design with strong colors, they show the resurrection of Christ , Pentecost and the adoration of the Lamb of God according to the Revelation of John . Two windows from 1883 have been preserved to the left and right of the organ. The left shows the Margrave Philibert von Baden and Count Wilhelm IV von Eberstein. The right window shows the reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .

organ

The organ was rebuilt in 2000 by the organ building company Heintz from Schiltach.
