Jan Frers Martens Fegter (born October 7, 1852 in Schoonorth , † March 21, 1931 in Süderneuland ) was a German politician ( FVP , DDP ) and peasant functionary.

Live and act

Jan Fegter was born as the son of an evangelical reformed landowner and dike judge . After attending primary school in Werdenumer Neuland and secondary school in Emden , which he graduated from high school in 1870, he was trained as a farmer on various farms. From 1871 to 1872 he was a one-year volunteer in the military. From 1884 to 1913, Fegter was the leaseholder of the royal domain of Kloster Aland in the Emden district, succeeding his father. He then lived as a farmer and later as a reindeer in Süderneuland near the north .

Political career

Fegter gained his first political experience at the local political level: from 1889 to 1908 he was the mayor of the community in Werdenum and at the same time was a member of the district committee and district deputy in the north, one of the most influential politicians in the district. Fegter also became a member of the smallholder German farmers' union, on whose Reich executive committee he had sat since 1917. As a professional representative he wrote articles for some smaller East Frisian newspapers, for the “ Vossische Zeitung ” and especially for the “ Berliner Tageblatt ”. There were also writings about storm surges and dyke construction, about the leasehold conditions in the East Frisian marshes and some historical treatises.

From a by-election in April 1908 until the collapse of the monarchy in Germany in autumn 1918, Fegter was a member of the Reichstag as a member of the left-liberal Liberal Association (intern) and the Progressive People's Party for the constituency of Hanover 1 (Emden-Norden).

In 1919 Fegter, who had already committed to the form of the republic before the November Revolution, joined the German Democratic Party (DDP). On November 22, 1919, he entered the Weimar National Assembly as a replacement for the resigned MP Theodor Tantzen , where he represented constituency 15 (Aurich-Osnabrück). Fegter, he had also been a member of the Prussian Council of State since 1921 , after not being nominated for the 1920 Reichstag election. He belonged to this until 1926 and again from 1928 to 1933.

Fegter belonged to the constituency board of the DDP and was its district chairman in East Friesland . He was also a member of the Hanover provincial parliament from 1919 until his death for various East Frisian constituencies. In the spring of 1919 he was re-elected to the north district council, entered the influential district committee and also became a senator for the city of Norden.
