Jan Mikusiński (born April 3, 1913 in Stanisławów , † July 27, 1987 in Katowice ) was a Polish mathematician who is known for his contributions to the calculation of operators in analysis .

Live and act

Mikusiński graduated from Poznan University (graduated in 1937). During the Second World War , like many Polish mathematicians, he worked underground in a university. In 1945 he received his doctorate in Krakow with Tadeusz Ważewski ( Sur unproblemème d'interpolation pour les intégrales des equations différentielles linéaires ) and was then a lecturer in Breslau (1948), Warsaw (1955) and Katowice . In 1955 he completed his habilitation. In the 1960s he headed the newly founded Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Katowice.

Mikusiński is known for the development of a named after him calculus of the differential and integral operators , which is partially powerful than the distribution calculus of Laurent Schwartz , or in the theory of Laplace transform detectable operators. He uses the convolution operator as the product of two functions. In 1953 he wrote the book Operator Calculation about it . His work was a further contribution to the operator calculus by Oliver Heaviside to give back to the 19th century, a mathematically rigorous basis.

Mikusiński was awarded the Stefan Banach Prize in 1950. In 1970 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock .
