Jan Nepomucen Głowacki (* 1802 in Cracow ; † July 28, 1847 there) was a Polish painter, draftsman and miniaturist of the Romantic period .

Life

He was the son of the organ builder Błazej Głowacki and spent his school days in the Lizeum of St. Anne. From 1819 to 1825 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Antoni Brodowski and Józef Peszka . He completed his training at the academies in Prague , Munich , Rome (scholarship from the City of Krakow) and Vienna (with Franz Steinfeld ).

In 1828 Głowacki returned to Kraków. Here he initially worked as a drawing teacher at the St. Anna-Lizeum and later as an associate professor at the academy. From 1837 he was a member of the Cracow Scientific Society. From 1840 he was teaching landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts.

Głowacki was a technically skilled painter who was the first Polish painter to devote himself to views of the Tatra Mountains and the Podhale foothills . The painting of the mountain lake Morskie Oko from 1837 is considered to be the first landscape painting of the High Tatras . It stands for the beginning of Polish mountain painting , which also earned him the title father of Polish landscape painting . In addition, he made numerous portraits that were influenced by the Vienna School of Painting and Thomas Lawrence . Głowacki also interpreted religious, mythological and genre motifs .

The Cracow National Museum has the largest collection of Głowacki's works .
