Jerold Taylor "Jay" Wright Junior (born December 24, 1961 in Churchville (Pennsylvania) ) is an American basketball coach .

Life

Wright grew up in Churchville, Pennsylvania  as the oldest of three children. He played basketball at the local Council Rock High School North and then at Bucknell University until 1983 .

He began his coaching career in 1984 as an assistant coach at the University of Rochester in the third NCAA division. In 1986 he moved to Drexel University , where he was an assistant coach for a year, as well as from 1987 to 1992 at Villanova University and from 1992 to 1994 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In 1994 he took up his first position as head coach at Hofstra University and held this position until 2001. During this time, the team won 122 games under his leadership and lost 85. In the 1999/2000 season Hofstra succeeded under Wright for the first time since 1977, the jump into the NCAA finals. In 2000 and 2001 he was named Trainer of the Year at the America East Conference . Well-known protégés Wright at Hofstra University were Craig "Speedy" Claxton and Norman Richardson .

For the 2001/02 season Wright returned to Villanova University and worked there from then on as head coach. In 2016 and 2018 he led the university team to win the championship title in the first NCAA division. He was named College Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2016. As a Villanova coach, Wright trained well-known players such as Kyle Lowry , Jalen Brunson , Mikal Bridges , Josh Hart , Omari Spellman and Donte DiVincenzo .

In addition to his duties as a coach in college basketball, Wright was appointed assistant coach of the US national team in October 2018 to oversee the selection at the side of head coach Gregg Popovich at the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympic Games. He had previously worked for the association, leading the US team to the gold medal at the Universiade as head coach in the summer of 2005 , and in 2007 he coached the US team at the Pan American Games , which ended in fifth place. In 2000 he was assistant coach of the US junior national team, which won silver at the World Cup.
