Jazz på svenska ("Jazz in Swedish") is a jazz album by the Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson , which was released as a long-playing record in 1964. The album, which exclusively contained jazz versions of old folk songs, was particularly well received in Sweden and had a major impact on the further development of Scandinavian jazz.

History of the album

Johansson was interested in the music of his Swedish homeland at a time when the other musicians on the Swedish scene were either imitating American models or trying to develop their own way within free jazz . His album 8 Bitar Johansson already contained a Swedish folk song , De sålde sina hemman , in addition to his own compositions and jazz standards . Remarks in discussions encouraged him to adapt other folk songs as jazz songs in the following years and to record them together with bassist Georg Riedel. He selected the songs from the extensive 24-volume Svenska Latar collection . According to Georg Riedel's memory, Johansson was “very unsure at first and asked many musicians what they thought of his approach.” From 1962 to 1964, Johansson recorded three EPs , which were then summarized in 1964 on the LP Jazz på svenska .

Music of the album

The selected titles are partly based on dance songs, deal with trolls ( Berg-Kristis Polka ), refer to legendary musicians such as Höök Olle or Larshöga Jonke or to certain places (such as Älvdalen ) and regions of Sweden such as Medelpad . Johansson interpreted the songs as a duo with Riedel in a very chamber- musical way , "with a mixture of Bach 's or Grieg 's delicacy and improvising openness". Johansson played with a feather-light touch that was “but with incredible authority”. The style of the lecture “was sedate, gentle, a little faded. Johansson played stylistically astonishingly self-sufficient, stayed in the idiom of the simple, minor harmony , which he added, however, with flowing, coquettishly ornamented melodies . "

Edition history

In the past, the album (without the bonus tracks) was released on CD as a folkvisor with the successor Jazz på ryska , which was recorded in 1967 and dealt with Russian folklore . Part of the album was also released under the title Svenska folklatar .

Effect of the album

Jazz på svenska was "an unimaginable success" in Sweden - there the album had sold over a million times by 2011 (with a population of eight million); Johansson became one of the most popular Swedish jazz musicians. Together with Bengt-Arne Wallin's Old Folklore in Swedish Modern , Jazz på svenska can be understood as the most important milestone for “the emancipation of Scandinavian jazz” up to Bobo Stenson , Bugge Wesseltoft or Esbjörn Svensson . The music magazine Jazzwise added the album to The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World list ; Stuart Nicholson justified this with a unique approach to jazz thanks to Johansson's carefully nuanced sound, the gradations of his searchlight and the exquisite detail of every note that can be heard on this meticulously high quality recording.
