Jean-Baptiste-Marie-Edouard Campenon

Jean Baptiste Marie Edouard Campenon (born May 4, 1819 in Tonnerre , † March 16, 1891 in Paris ) was a French Général de division and Minister of War .

Campenon took part in the Crimean War and in 1859 as Deputy Chief of Staff at the General Staff of General Patrice de Mac-Mahon during the Italy campaign. In China he was a general staff officer on the staff of General Charles Cousin-Montauban and then chief of staff in an infantry and later in a cavalry division .

Before the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870, Campenon was promoted to colonel . He was seriously wounded in the fighting for Vionville and after the surrender of the fortress Metz near Aachen he was taken prisoner of war . In 1875 he was promoted to Général de brigade and in 1880 to Général de division .

In November 1881 Campenon was appointed Minister of War, but resigned in January 1882. Between October 1883 and January 1885 and April 1885 and January 1886 he was again Minister of War.

During his administration he mainly dealt with the reorganization of the fortress artillery .

Jean Baptiste Marie Edouard Campenon died on March 16, 1891 in Paris.
