Jean-Baptiste Martin (painter)
Jean-Baptiste Martin (also Martin des Batailles , * 1659 in Paris ; † October 8, 1735 ibid) was a French battle and vedute painter .
life and work
Jean-Baptiste Martin was a pupil and imitator of Adam Frans van der Meulen . He became premier peintre de cônquetes du Roi and accompanied King Louis XIV and the Dauphin on their campaigns in 1688/89 and 1691/92 ( War of the Palatinate Succession ). He painted sieges and battles as well as views of the royal castles. He adorned the four refectories of the Hôtel des Invalides with frescoes with views of the fortresses conquered by King Louis XIV and, in 1710/12, commissioned Duke Leopold of Lorraine to create a series of 20 depictions with scenes from the life of his father, Duke Charles V. from Lorraine .
Works by Jean-Baptiste Martin can now be found in the museums of Caen , Dijon , Dole , Douai , Marseille , Metz , Montpellier , Munich ( Bavarian National Museum ), Paris Louvre , Rouen , Tours , Valenciennes , Versailles Palace and in Vienna Army History Museum .
