Jean-Jules-Armand Colbert, Marquis de Blainville (born December 17, 1663 , † August 13, 1704 in Ulm ) was a French nobleman, grand master of ceremonies and military.

biography

Colbert was the fourth son of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, marquis de Seignelay and Marie Charron Menars. By marrying Gabrielle de Rochechouart-Morte, he became a nobleman and carried the title of Marquis de Blainville.

He became superintendent of buildings, a title he inherited from his father, but which he disliked because he was attracted to the military. He rose quickly in the army of Louis XIV , was captain in the Régiment de Picardie (1683), Colonel of the Régiment de Foix (1684), took part in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1688 in the capture of Philippsburg , Mannheim and Frankenthal . After selling his title as superintendent, he returned to the war for Spanish succession in 1701 and took part in the sieges of Kortrijk and Diksmuide . He fought at Cochem and received a regiment in his name, which led him to serve in Germany (1690).

He was promoted to Maréchal de camp , fought on the Moselle and commanded the Rhine troops from Rheinzabern to Lauterbourg , served on the Maas (1696), in Flanders (1697) and Landau (1699). As acting military governor , he was forced to surrender on June 15, 1702 at 6:00 a.m. after 59 days of open combat in the siege of Kaiserswerth . The Count of Nassau granted him honorable conditions. This resistance earned him the title of lieutenant-général .

He then served in the Netherlands, in the army of the young Duke of Burgundy and Marshal Boufflers . From 1703 he fought in Bavaria under Marshal Villars . He took part in the First Battle of Höchstädt , served in the army of the Elector of Bavaria , fought at the side of Marshal Marsin in 1704 and conquered the small imperial city of Giengen . Jean-Jules-Armand Colbert also fought in the Second Battle of Höchstädt , where he was so badly wounded on August 13 that he died on the same day.
