Jean-Marie Luton

Jean-Marie Luton (born August 4, 1942 in Chamalières ; † April 16, 2020 ) was a French engineer , scientist and space official. From 1990 to 1997 he was Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Life

Luton graduated from the École polytechnique in 1961 and then worked at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). In 1974 Jean-Marie Luton moved to the Center national d'études spatiales (CNES). In 1978 he became program director there, and a short time later became director of administration and finance. From 1987 he worked for Arianespace. In 1989 he became Director General of CNES, and one year later of ESA. In 1997 Jean-Marie Luton became Chairman of the Board of Arianespace , in 2002 Chairman of the Board of Directors , and in 2007 he retired.

Jean-Marie Luton is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and the Association Aéronautique et Astronautique de France .
