Cabu (2012)

Jean Cabut , pseudonym Cabu (born January 13, 1938 in Châlons-en-Champagne , † January 7, 2015 in Paris ), was a French comic artist , cartoonist and caricaturist . He was murdered in the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo magazine .

Life

At the age of twelve, Jean Cabut won a competition organized by the weekly newspaper Cœurs vaillants , which earned him a bicycle and the publication of his drawing. He continued drawing and published his first illustrations in 1954 in the regional daily newspaper l'Union de Reims . In Paris, Cabut studied art at the École Estienne . Cabut also worked for Jazz Hot during this time (he later illustrated the jazz anthology Cabu chez Nocturne and the covers of several jazz records).

His career was hampered by the Algerian War. Jean Cabut was drafted into the army and made his skills available to the army newspaper Le Bled (The Hinterland) based in Constantine, Algeria , for 27 months , for which Philippe Labro and Francis Veber also drew. He published in particular the series La Fille du Colonel (German: The Colonel's daughter ). Cabu became a staunch anti-militarist activist and cultivated an anarchist vision of society, which he translated into his drawings. His figure of the adjutant Kronenbourg was inspired by this time. Cabu also worked for Paris Match magazine during his military service .

In 1960, after completing his military service, he always drew for various newspapers, including l'Enragé ; short-lived publications only printed caricatures. Cabu then joined the Hara-Kiri magazine founded by François Cavanna and Georges Bernier (called “Professeur Choron”), where he found an environment that coincided with his ideas and where he relied on other talented illustrators such as Gébé , Fred , Wolinski or Reiser .

Since 1962, Cabu also worked for the comic magazine Pilote . He was the first of several artists who had been poached by René Goscinny from Hara-Kiri and who brought new themes and graphic forms to the pilot . From 1964 he created the comic Le Grand Duduche (German: The great Duduche ) about a clumsy high school student who was inspired by Cabu's memories of his high school days in Châlons and who rebelled against authoritarian structures and petty bourgeoisie. In terms of content, he anticipated the 68 movement . The series Beauf (German: stupid philistine, dull cheek , actually brother-in-law , from the French word beau-frêre) was later created in the same magazine . Cabu began to work as a press draftsman , for the daily newspaper Paris Presse until it was discontinued and, via the Ben Barka trial in 1966, for Le Figaro . In 1968 he received the Crayon d'or (German: Golden Pencil ) for press drawings, which was presented to him by Pierre Dac . In the same year he became a member of the draftsman's group of the weekly newspaper Hara-Kiri Hebdo , an offshoot of Hara-Kiri , and after its ban in 1970 draftsman at Charlie Hebdo for two pages per week.

1972 left Cabu together with Jean-Marc Reiser Pilote , by conflicts between artistic freedom and the constraints of an appeal to a large audience magazine. From then on he continued Le Grand Duduche in Charlie Hebdo . Cabu had great success in the 1970s and 1980s and released numerous albums. In 1979 he also published in the anti-war journal of the pacifist union. Then he turned to political caricature and drew for the new Charlie Hebdo and for Le Canard enchaîné from 1982 , where he updated the character of Beauf in 1995 . Engaged by Jacqueline Joubert , Cabu also appeared in the youth program Récré A2 : He made quick drawings and was part of the animators around the presenter Dorothée .

In 1982 Cabu worked for the three French television stations FR3 , Antenne 2 and TF1 - there for the show Droit de réponse (German: counter-representation ) with presenter Michel Polac . In 1986 he published Le Nez de Dorothée (German: Dorothées Nase ), a selection of his drawings for Récré A2 . His fame earned him a biographical article in the 1985 edition of Le Petit Robert des noms propres .

Jean Cabut was killed in the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on January 7, 2015 . He was buried in Châlons-en-Champagne .

Cabut was the father of the singer Mano Solo .
