Everyone is a star! (Cinema title) or Everybody's Famous! (DVD title) is the title of a Belgian-Dutch-French comedy film from 2000.

content

The simple factory worker Jean Vereecken dreams of becoming a famous songwriter and projects this lifelong dream onto his chubby daughter Marva , whom he has accompanied to singing competitions and karaoke shows from an early age . Full of envy, he looks at the television appearances of the singer Debbie , who is already a real star.

One day Jean comes up with another song with which he surprises his daughter at the breakfast table. However, Marva reacts to the constant pressure of expectation from her father very annoyed. Meanwhile, Jean steers into a crisis as he soon becomes unemployed. When his car gave up, of all people, Debbie , whom he regarded as an arch-rival, provided roadside assistance. Without further ado, he kidnaps her and tries to blackmail Debbie's producers with his hostage in order to make his song a real hit and daughter Marva a real star.

background

With the simple environment on the structurally weak country and on the basis of the worries, needs and dreams of ordinary people, the film starts with a serious background. At the same time, however, with a constant wink he works up numerous clichés from both the interpersonal sector and show business . For example, Willy , Jeans ' best friend , can be used by his girlfriend, who can be financed by him in exchange for occasional sex (e.g. a vacation with her lover disguised as a study trip). And of course there is also the common notion that you can only become a star if you sleep your way upstairs.

The entertainment value of the film is based on bizarre scenes and situation comedy that result from ill-considered and often unexpected spontaneous decisions and their inevitable consequences. For example, Jean conceals his identity in a conversation with Debbie's producers with a Michael Jackson mask , but at the same time comes out by naming his daughter as the designated interpreter of the future hit. In a similar way, numerous other behavioral patterns and clichés are poked fun at, so that the plot inevitably has to come across as pleasantly comical.

criticism

Everyone is a star! earned a lot of acclaim from the critics as a cynical, bizarre, almost British-looking comedy, which was justifiably nominated for an Oscar. The film wins its audience mainly because of the respect and affection for the mostly naive but lovable characters. In order to be understood as a fitting satire, however, the critics often lacked bite. The film was seen as too tame and harmless for that, which is mainly caused by the harmonizing finale. And precisely the fact that at the end of the day not knowing clearly whether the film should be understood ironically or not was one of the most weighty points of criticism. After all, the peaceful ending could give the impression that kidnapping is an effective means of coping with everyday problems.

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2001.

Josse De Pauw won the Belgian Joseph Plateau Film Prize for Best Actor in 2000 . Eva Van Der Gucht, Dominique Deruddere and the film itself (as Best Belgian Film ) were also nominated for the Joseph Plateau Film Awards.

Dominique Deruddere also won the 2001 audience awards at the Ljubljanski Mednarodni Filmski Festival and the Festival du Cinéma Nordique de Rouen as well as the Silver Dolphin in the Best Screenplay category of the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Tróia (Festróia) .
