Jeffrey William Batters (born October 23, 1970 in Victoria , British Columbia , † August 23, 1996 near Banff , Alberta ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 16 games for the St. Louis Blues in the course of his playing career between 1988 and 1996 has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Mostly Batters, who died of a traffic accident at the age of 25, played in the International Hockey League .
Career
Batters spent part of his junior career until 1988 with the Notre Dame Hounds in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , with whom he won both the Credential Cup of the SJHL and the Centennial Cup of the Canadian Junior Hockey League . Rod Brind'Amour , Scott Pellerin and Dwayne Norris also played in the team at the time . From the Hounds, the defender moved to the University of Alaska Anchorage in the summer of 1988 , for which he took part in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations as a conference-independent team for the next four years, parallel to his studies for the university team .
During his time at university, Batters was selected in the seventh round in the seventh round in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft in 135th place by the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League , which finally brought him to their farm team at the time , the Peoria Rivermen , from the International Hockey League . The defender spent the following three years in the Peorias team, but was also able to recommend himself for the NHL squad of the Blues with his performances there, so that between 1993 and 1995 he made 16 appearances for St. Louis. After his contract expired at the end of the 1994/95 season , the Canadian moved to the San Jose Sharks as a free agent in September 1995 . The Sharks also used Batters in the IHL, where he ran into their Kansas City Blades farm team. With 34 scorer points , he significantly improved his previous record in the course of the season and even received an invitation from the Canadian national team to take part in the 1996 World Cup in Austria .
In August 1996 - during the summer break, the NHL - Batters was near Banff in the province of Alberta involved in a traffic accident when he was working there at a youth camp for hockey players. He died at the age of 25 as a result of the accident.
