Jerónimo Tomás Abreu Herrera

Jerónimo Tomás Abreu Herrera (born September 30, 1930 in Jarabacoa , Dominican Republic , † June 27, 2012 in Cacique, Monción ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Mao-Monte Cristi .

Life

Jerónimo Tomás Abreu Herrera entered the Papal Seminary of St. Thomas Aquinas (Seminario Pontificio Santo Tomás de Aquino) in Santo Domingo in 1948 and completed the priestly philosophical and theological studies. He graduated in philosophy from the Universidad Católica Santo Domingo and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1955 . He received his doctorate in canon law at the Roman Pontifical Lateran University . He attended other pastoral courses at the Institute for Latin America Pastoral (IPRG) in Quito , Ecuador.

He was vicar, vice chancellor, chancellor and cathedral vicar at the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion in La Vega. Among other things, he was pastor of Our Lady of Fatima in Bonao and vicar general for pastoral care and pastor of the parish of Bonao y de San Francisco de Macorís.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 16, 1978 Bishop of Mao-Monte Cristi . The Archbishop of Santo Domingo , Octavio Antonio Cardinal Beras Rojas , donated him episcopal ordination on March 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Roque Antonio Adames Rodríguez , Bishop of Santiago de los Caballeros , and Juan Antonio Flores Santana , Bishop of La Vega .

Abreu was from 1978 a member of the Dominican Bishops' Conference and delegate in the meetings of the Council of Latin American Bishops CELAM as well as chairman of the Episcopal Commission for the Laity and Youth (1978) and chairman of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education (1985). He was chairman of the board of the Instituto politécnico del noroeste (INPONOR). From 1986 until his death he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Development of the Northeast (INDENOR).

On May 24, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
