Jereimentau ( Kazakh and Russian Ерейментау ) is a city in Kazakhstan .

Geographical location

The city is located in the Aqmola area on the Nur-Sultan - Kulunda railway line 146 km northeast of the Kazakh capital. Jereimentau is the administrative seat of the administrative district of the same name Jereimentau . It is on the South Siberian Railway .

history

In 1965 the place was granted city rights. At the end of the 1970s it was planned to establish a German Autonomous Oblast for the Volga Germans and their descendants within the Kazakh SSR , as around 900,000 Russian Germans were living in Kazakhstan at the time. This autonomy was to serve as a replacement for the Volga German Republic , which was dissolved in 1941 . Jereimentau was intended as the administrative center. However, this project failed due to the resistance of the local population.
