Stepnogor ( Kazakh Степногор ; Russian Степногорск Stepnogorsk ) is a city in Kazakhstan .
Geographical location
The city is located about 130 kilometers (as the crow flies) north-northeast of the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan in the Aqmola area . It is 239 kilometers to the regional capital, Kökschetau .
history
The place was founded in 1959 and made a city in 1964. In Soviet times, the city was codenamed Zelinograd-25 (Russian Целиноград-25 ) or Makinsk-2 ( Макинск-2 ), derived from the name of the city of Nu-Sultan and the city of Makinsk . Nuclear ( uranium enrichment ) and biochemical facilities were built near the city . During the Soviet era, biological weapons , including anthrax spores , were developed and manufactured there by the Soviet authority Biopreparat, among others by Ken Alibek .

Infrastructure
At Stepnogor there is a 24 km long works railway that connects the center and residential area of the city with the factories to the northeast. Exclusively for passenger traffic this route is as isolated operation at 3000 volts DC electrified and since 1990 with " elektrichka " series ЭР22 (ER22) operated. It is the only route on which multiple units of this series, which were built in relatively small numbers in the 1960s, are still in service.
