Stepnogor ( Kazakh Степногор ; Russian Степногорск Stepnogorsk ) is a city in Kazakhstan .

Geographical location

The city is located about 130 kilometers (as the crow flies) north-northeast of the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan in the Aqmola area . It is 239 kilometers to the regional capital, Kökschetau .

history

The place was founded in 1959 and made a city in 1964. In Soviet times, the city ​​was codenamed Zelinograd-25 (Russian Целиноград-25 ) or Makinsk-2 ( Макинск-2 ), derived from the name of the city of Nu-Sultan and the city of Makinsk . Nuclear ( uranium enrichment ) and biochemical facilities were built near the city . During the Soviet era, biological weapons , including anthrax spores , were developed and manufactured there by the Soviet authority Biopreparat, among others by Ken Alibek .

Infrastructure
