Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley Mamabolo (born August 13, 1955 in Johannesburg ) is a South African diplomat who was Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations between 2013 and 2016 and, since 2016, initially Deputy and since 2017 United Special Representative and Head of the African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) is.

Life

Educational path

Mamabolo graduated from the University of Pretoria with a degree in public administration , which he completed with a master's degree. He finished another degree in journalism at Harare Polytechnic College in Harare with a diploma. He also completed a degree in social sciences at the Moscow School of Social Sciences in the Soviet Union , which he completed with a graduate diploma.

career path

In 1978, at the age of 23, he became Deputy Head of the African National Congress (ANC) Representation in Tanzania . From here his diplomatic career developed in different places:

In 1994, after the end of apartheid , he returned to South Africa after 18 years in exile.

Mamabolo has now entered the service of the Foreign Ministry of South Africa and was appointed South African High Commissioner in Zimbabwe from 1995 to 1999 .

From 1999 to 2002 he was permanent representative at the Organization for African Unity (OAU) and at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), both of which are based in Addis Ababa . He also acted as ambassador to Ethiopia , Sudan and Djibouti . During this time between 2001 and 2002, as the African Union's special envoy for Sierra Leone and the Mano River Basin, he was instrumental in initiating talks to end the civil war in Sierra Leone . From 2002 to 2006 he was Deputy Director General for Africa Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was responsible for the entire coordination and administration of bilateral and multilateral relations in Africa.

He was then Special Envoy South Africa for the African Great Lakes region between 2006 and 2009 and promoted the peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi as a negotiator . He then held the post of High Commissioner in Nigeria from 2009 to 2013 . In 2013 he was appointed Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations and on March 13, 2013 he presented his letter of accreditation to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon . He held this office until March 2016, during which time he was also chairman of the Group of 77 , a loose association of states that are predominantly among the Third World countries .

On March 2, 2016, Mamabolo was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Chairman of the Commission of the African Union Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to succeed Abiodun Oluremi Bashua , who came from Nigeria, as the Deputy Joint Special Representative of the African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) and as such was responsible for overseeing the political, human rights and legal aspects of the mission in the Darfur conflict . As the successor to Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi , who also comes from Nigeria, he was initially appointed acting United Special Representative and Head of the African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur on January 12, 2017 by UN Secretary General António Guterres and AU Commission Chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma ( UNAMID) before he was finally appointed United Special Representative and Head of UNAMID three months later on April 3, 2017 by UN Secretary General Guterres and the new AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki .
