Jerzy Samuel Bandtkie
Jerzy Samuel Bandtkie (also Georg Samuel Bandtke, code names "Bezimienny z Wrocławia", "Postman Hess", "G. S. B."; * November 24, 1768 in Lublin ; † June 11, 1835 in Krakow ) was a Polish librarian , philologist , historian of the Linguistics and printing, lexicographer and editor.
He was the son of the merchant of Lutheran denomination and of German descent Johann Samuel Bandtke and his wife Anna Maria geb. Noack. In 1779 he came to Breslau to see his uncle, the shoemaker Johann Georg Bandtke, and there he attended the St. Elisabeth high school (Elisabethanum) . After graduating from high school in 1787, he came to Halle and in 1789 to Jena , where he studied theology , history and philology.
After graduating in 1790, he was employed as governor by Pastor Nürnburger in the suburb of Breslau, then until 1798 by Burgrave Piotr Ożarowski in Brzoza near Kozienice . At that time he visited Warsaw , Berlin , Saint Petersburg and Dresden .
The Wroclaw Period (1798-1810)
In Wroclaw he worked as a teacher for the Polish language in the St. Elisabeth High School and as a librarian. From 1802 he was an employee of the Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn publishing house as a consultant for Polish-language books. On February 2, 1804, he became rector of the Holy Spirit School and librarian at the St. Bernard Church. In 1810 he visited the Polish cities of Lublin , Krakow and Puławy .
The Cracow Period (1811-1835)
In 1811 he was appointed head of the Jagiellonian Library . At the Jagiellonian University he gave lectures on bibliography. He also received an honorary doctorate from the university.
He died in Krakow and was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery . His brother Jan Wincenty Bandtkie was a legal historian and a Freemason.
