Jessica Walter (born October 14, 1984 in Vaduz ) is a former Liechtenstein ski racer who was a member of the national team of the Liechtenstein Ski Association . She became junior runner-up in giant slalom and won a race in the European Cup . Walter once took part in the World Championships and the Olympic Winter Games and was in the top 25 three times in the World Cup. Her career was interrupted several times by injuries. After her fourth cruciate ligament rupture , she retired from professional sport in 2007.

biography

Walter took part in FIS races for the first time in January 2000 , followed by the first starts in the European Cup a year later . In February 2001 she took part in a junior world championship for the first time . She was able to classify in all competitions and achieved 23rd place in the Super-G as the best result. A year later she suffered her first serious injury in the departure of the Junior World Championships in 2002 , which is why she had to end the season early. On December 22nd, 2002 Walter had her first start in the World Cup in the Lenzerheide slalom . But she couldn't qualify for the second round. In February 2003 she took part in the World Championships in St. Moritz . She finished 34th in slalom and 36th in giant slalom. Three weeks later she came ninth in slalom and 19th in giant slalom at the Junior World Championships .

The Liechtenstein girl achieved her best results in the 2003/04 season. On January 16, she came in the European Cup for the first time in the top ten and nine days later she got her first World Cup points when she finished 24th in the Slalom in Maribor. On February 6th, she celebrated her only European Cup victory in the Lenggries slalom . Two days later, she achieved her best World Cup result with 17th place in the Zwiesel slalom . Another week later she won the silver medal in giant slalom at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Maribor behind the German Maria Riesch . In the slalom she was eighth and in the downhill and in the Super-G she was able to place in the top 30, which brought her to fifth in the combined ranking. On March 8, however, she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the European Cup final in the Sierra Nevada . In the overall European Cup standings, Walter came in third place in the 2003/04 season with one win, two further podium places and another seven top ten results; in the slalom classification, she finished fifth.

Right at the beginning of next winter, Walter suffered a cruciate ligament rupture again in the World Cup giant slalom in Aspen , which is why the season was over for her by the end of November. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, the Liechtenstein girl was able to win two FIS races again and in Zoldo's European Cup slalom she finished fifth. In the World Cup she finished in the points for the third time on December 29th, finishing 22nd in the slalom in Lienz . On January 31, 2006 Walter injured his shoulder in the European Cup slalom in La Plagne . However, the injury was not serious and so she was able to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . At the opening ceremony, she was given the honor of being the flag bearer of the five-man Liechtenstein team. In the races she was only used in slalom and finished 32nd. In the next winter, at the beginning of January 2007, she suffered her fourth cruciate ligament rupture, which finally led her to end her career at the age of 22. Jessica Walter is the daughter of the former ski racer Petra Wenzel-Walter and thus the niece of Hanny and Andreas Wenzel, and thus the cousin of the active ski racer Tina Weirather.
