James Robert "Jim" Doran , (born August 11, 1927 in Beaver , Iowa , † June 30, 1994 in Lake City , Iowa) was an American American football player. He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys .

Player career

college

Jim Doran attended high school in his hometown . Since his school did not have a football team, he played basketball and baseball . In 1947 he joined, after a brief period of service in the US Navy at the end of World War II, the Buena Vista College at, denied for the local second football team in college football but only a game. After moving to Iowa State University , he was at the Iowa State Cyclones as an end . In 1949 he set a new national college record with 203 yards of space gained by pass catches. In his final year of study, he was elected to the All American and was elected to the league selection. 1951 also took place in the two selection games of the best college players, the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl .

NFL

Jim Doran was selected in 1951 by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round in the 55th place in the NFL Draft . The head coach of the Lions, Buddy Parker , put Doran next to Vince Banonis and John Prchlik mainly in the defensive line as a defensive end . In the following game year, the Lions won nine of 12 games and moved into the play-offs , where they first defeated the Los Angeles Rams with 31:21. Doran was able to bring down the opposing quarterback once behind the line of scrimmage in the game . He also managed a sack in the subsequent championship game against the Cleveland Browns trained by Paul Brown . With the 17: 7 win over the Browns Doran won his first NFL championship . The following year, Doran managed to win his second championship title. After ten wins and two defeats in the regular season , the team from Detroit met again in the championship game on the Browns, who this time lost 17:16. Doran was successful again in this game, but this time mostly in the position of the end. With four pass catches he managed to gain 95 yards. He was able to use a pass from quarterback Bobby Layne for a touchdown . With a sack to quarterback Otto Graham , he also again demonstrated his qualities as a defensive end.

Before the 1957 season, George Wilson had taken over the coaching position with the Lions. He led the Lions to their fourth NFL championship. After eight wins from 12 games, the Detroit team met the San Francisco 49ers in the play-offs . Jim Doran was able to contribute to the 31:27 victory of his team with two pass catches and a space gain of 51 yards. Opponents in the final were again the Cleveland Browns. Doran showed another good game and caught three passes from quarterback Tobin Rote to gain 101 yards. He carried a pass to a touchdown in the end zone of the Browns, who ultimately lost the game with 59:14.

Doran moved after the 1959 season to the newly founded and Tom Landry trained Dallas Cowboys . Landry put Doran on as a tight end in 1960 . Although Doran was nominated for the Pro Bowl after this season due to his athletic performance , his team could not convince and remained without a win this season. After another unsuccessful game round in 1961, he left the team from Dallas again. He had to end his career as a player in the Denver Broncos before the 1962 season due to an injury.

After the career

In 1964 and 1965, Doran was the assistant coach to Buddy Parker and Mike Nixon at the Pittsburgh Steelers . Both seasons were unsuccessful. Doran then returned to Iowa and ran a farm there. He was married and had three children. Jim Doran died of a heart attack.

Honors

Jim Doran has played in a Pro Bowl , is a member of the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame , the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame, and - although never playing football in school - the Iowa High School Football Hall of Fame.
