The Jin Mao Tower ( Chinese 金茂 大廈 / 金茂 大厦 , Pinyin Jīnmào Dàshà , roughly: golden magnificent building) is an 88-story skyscraper in the Pudong financial district in Shanghai .
description
The foundation stone of the tower planned by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill was laid back in 1994. Construction work was completed in 1998 and the building was the tallest in China with a height of 420.5 meters and 88 floors . It was not until 2008 that this title had to be given to the Shanghai World Financial Center, which is located in the immediate vicinity, with 492 meters and 101 floors. Today the building is still the fifth tallest in China and is ranked 13th in the world. The Shanghai Tower , which was completed in summer 2015 and has a total height of 632 meters, is also in its immediate vicinity . The Jin Mao Tower is the lowest of the three particularly tall buildings in this area.
The skyscraper was created according to traditional Chinese forms; The steel-and-glass façade, rising in the form of a staircase, is supposed to be reminiscent of a pagoda and a bamboo stalk. As with the Taipei 101 , eight as the Chinese lucky number also has a special meaning: Exactly when the design was selected, the head of state Deng Xiaoping was 88 years old, the above-mentioned 88 floors played a role and the building was inaugurated on August 28, 1998 .
The second highest observation deck in China is located 340 meters above the ground on the 88th floor, the highest is right next door in the crown of the SWFC. The elevator ride to the observation deck takes 46 seconds; the speed is 9 meters per second. There is also a swimming pool at a height of 250 meters. It is one of the highest swimming pools in a building in the world.
The lower 50 floors are used as offices. The 5-star Grand Hyatt Hotel with 555 rooms is located on the upper 38 floors . The hotel atrium begins on the 53rd floor and ends on the 87th floor, where the hotel's largest suite, at 285 m², is located. At 152 meters high and 27 meters in diameter, it is the largest atrium in the world; From the 52nd floor, the longest laundry shaft in the world leads to the basement of the tower.
Until the opening of the Park Hyatt Hotel in the neighboring World Financial Center, the building was the building with the highest rooms used as a hotel . But since the IFC also contains office space, the status as the highest pure hotel building was still reserved for the 333 meter high Rose Tower in Dubai .
Trivia
On May 31, 2007, the free climber Alain Robert climbed the skyscraper along the facade.
