João Gonçalves Filho (born December 7, 1934 in São Paulo , † June 27, 2010 ibid) was a Brazilian swimmer , water polo player and multiple participant in the Olympic Games .

biography

João Gonçalves Filho was a swimmer for the first time in 1952 at the Olympic Games in Helsinki . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 he took part again as a swimmer.

At the 1960 Olympic Games , he played in the Brazilian water polo team . However, he was eliminated with the team after the preliminary round after defeats against the Soviet Union and the all-German team as well as a draw against Argentina .

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 he was a member of the water polo team again and had to retire after the preliminary round after three defeats against the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , the Netherlands and the United States .

Most recently he took part in the water polo team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City as an active athlete. At the opening ceremony on October 12, 1968, he was the flag bearer of Brazil when the participating nations marched in. In the water polo competitions , his team, after five defeats against the USA, Cuba , Federal Republic of Germany , Hungary and the Soviet Union, as well as a draw against Spain , was the last of their group to not get past the preliminary round.

At the Pan American Games in 1951 he won a bronze medal with the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay. In 1959 he won bronze with the Brazilian water polo team, gold in 1963 and silver in 1967.

In addition, João Gonçalves Filho, who was the chairman of the judo department of the EC Pinheiros , participated in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and in Atlanta in 1996 as the technical supervisor of the Olympic judo team . It achieved 1992 Rogério Sampaio a gold medal and in 1996 Henrique Guimarães and Aurélio Miguel each bronze medals.

In 2002 he received the Troféu Adhemar Ferreira da Silva des Prêmio Brasil Olímpico for his services , an award from the National Olympic Committee ( Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro ) for ex-athletes, which is presented together with the prize for the Sportsman of the Year.
