Political positions

Call for a media boycott

In January 2012 Günther published on his homepage under the title “Ignore media hate speech? I am so free ”a call to boycott critical newspapers and broadcasters. In this Günther operated very emphatically " media scolding ". He referred to Federal President Christian Wulff , "whom the pack of journalists rushes like a mangy fox over all the front pages and through all television programs because he is said to have taken advantage of discounts". Günther explained that everyone else would do that, including journalists. He took the view that the media “temporarily (can) suggest to us that we are no longer even allowed to build a new, modern train station in Germany . Not to mention a wide variety of bridge, road and power line construction projects. "

He firmly took the view that the media were following the politics of the liberals z. B. misrepresent in the financial transaction tax or data retention . He also declared "that we as liberals are ending the game that the press across Germany has been imposing on us for months". Media with “left-green hysteria reporting” would have too much power. Günther continued:

“Who will stop this campaign madness? As long as we, as newspaper readers, radio listeners and television viewers, continue to be led by the nose, nothing will change. Until then, we will continue to receive mainly negative headlines and reports that have the whiff of a scandal - from world and federal politics, by the way, as well as from local events. "

- Joachim Günther

He called for the "misleading" media to be boycotted:

“Now you cannot simply ask immoral and incompetent journalists to resign. But you can unsubscribe from newspapers and no longer switch on radio and television stations. I am sure that things would change in the media area then. But that requires consensus among consumers and a certain amount of values. From my point of view, it's about humanity, democracy and self-respect. "

- Joachim Günther

At the same time, he sent his liberal MPs colleagues and a number of Union MPs an identical letter. He called on the addressees to spread the call for a boycott.

The FDP leadership then expressly distanced itself from Günther's statements.
