Joachim Rathke (* 1968 in Kiel ) is a German opera and theater director .

Life

After studying musicology and Romance studies in Hamburg and opera directing at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin (HFM), he was employed as assistant director at the Kiel Opera House , the Folkoperan Stockholm, the Braunschweig State Theater and the Frankfurt Opera . In 1998 he was engaged as a director at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin.

Joachim Rathke has worked as a freelance director since 2001 and has so far staged 2 plays and 37 operas in Germany and abroad. For the Munich Biennale for New Music Theater in 2010, in collaboration with Georges Delnon, he worked on the world premiere of the opera Maldoror by Philipp Maintz . Rathke has also been working since 1996, initially as an assistant director, then as a co-director with Christoph Marthaler . He also held teaching positions at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig , at the Mahidol University of Bangkok and at the University of Television and Film in Munich , and in 2012 and 2015 he directed at the Nuremberg University of Music .
