Joan Martí Alanís

Joan Martí Alanís (born November 29, 1928 in El Milà in the Comarca Alt Camp , Catalonia , Spain ; † October 11, 2009 in Barcelona ) was Bishop of Urgell and thus at the same time co- prince of Andorra .

Life

Joan Martí Alanís was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Tarragona on June 17, 1951 . He studied philosophy and Catholic theology, French and English as well as art and classical literature.

On November 25, 1970, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Urgell. On January 31, 1971, Luigi Dadaglio , apostolic nuncio in Spain and later cardinal, donated him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Toledo and later Cardinal, Marcelo González Martín , and the Archbishop of Tarragona, José Pont y Gol . In 2001 he was given the personal title of Archbishop by Pope John Paul II .

In his function as Co-Prince of Andorra, he was instrumental in establishing a modern constitutional state in Andorra. In the Spanish Bishops' Conference (CEE) he chaired the Episcopal Commission for Migration (1984–1987) and the Episcopal Commission for Social Media (1987–1993). He was also a member of the Executive Committee from 1978 to 1984 and later a member of the Episcopal Commission for Missions. Between 1989 and 1999 he was a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. In 1989 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica .

His resignation was granted in 2003 by Pope John Paul II .
